False Alarm Reduction Tips

Having issues with too many false alarms?

We understand how frustrating and disruptive they can be. Everyone is unique, with varying levels of health and activity. That’s why we offer a solution that caters to your individual needs. With our customization options, you can tailor the app to match your unique lifestyle and minimize those false alarms.

SeizAlarm offers two types of detection, each designed to enhance accuracy and reduce false positives. Our motion-based detection system intelligently analyzes your movement patterns, distinguishing between regular activities and potential seizure events. We also offer heart rate-based detection. By monitoring your heart rate in real-time, SeizAlarm can detect abnormal spikes or drops that may indicate that there is a seizure.

With SeizAlarm, you can easily adjust the sensitivity levels of both motion and heart rate-based detection to align with your specific needs. See below some tips that can help you reduce false alarms.

If these tips do not work for you, reach out and contact us.

Customize motion sensitivity

If you go into the “Settings” in the app you’ll find the ability to adjust the sensitivity for Watch and iPhone detection. You only need to adjust the one you are using.  The sensitivity is on a scale of 1 to 10 with “10” being most sensitive.  The higher the sensitivity the more likely it is to have false alarms. The default is set to “3”, which is a good place to start.  If you have too many false alarms, try changing it to a “2”, and if events aren’t being detected they try a “4”. Keep adjusting until you arrive at a setting that works best for you.

Customize heart rate thresholds

If you go into the “Settings” in the app you’ll find the ability to set high and low heart rate thresholds.  If the heart rate goes above the high threshold or below the low threshold then help requests will be sent.  The range is very dependent on health, so we recommend you speak with your doctor to determine the best one to use.

By default, heart rate detection is off.  If you do not need that type of detection, make sure to turn it off.

Check what is triggering the false alarms

In the “Log”, you can see the initiation type.  This will help you determine what may need customization to reduce false alarms.  Triggers are motion from the iPhone or Watch, heart rate, or manual button presses on the iPhone or Watch.

Wear the Watch correctly if you are using the Watch for detection

Make sure you wear your Watch firmly.  Not too tight and not too loose.  This is required for the most accurate readings from the Watch’s sensors.

If using the iPhone for detection, firmly attach it to your body

If you are using the iPhone for detection, make sure it isn’t in a loose pocket.  We recommend using an exercise arm bad to attach the iPhone to your arm.

Turn off monitoring during rigorous activities

SeizAlarm does its best to filter out non-seizure motion, but exercise makes detection much less accurate since exercise also results in increased motion and/or heart rate.

Disable the manual help request buttons

If the false alarms are triggered due to accidental presses of the manual help request buttons, you can disable them in the “Settings” in the app.

Do not enable monitoring on your iPhone if you are using the Watch for detection

If both devices are monitoring for seizures at the same time, you will more than likely have more false alarms.

You can cancel help requests before they are sent

Don’t forget, you can cancel help requests before they are sent.  When a potential seizure is detected, a countdown will begin.  The length of this countdown is customizable by you in the “Settings”.  Before the countdown starts, the app will trigger a mild vibration on the Watch and play a low volume sound.  This indicates that there is activity that might trigger a help request if continued.  If it continues, a louder sound plays and the countdown begins.  If it is not a seizure, you can cancel the help request before it is sent.
